Goya’s paintings and prints are some of the most powerful artworks ever produced about human responses to conflict, poverty and violence. His genius is to tell the unvarnished truth but to find in it occasional touches of humour and hope in the form of solidarity and compassion.
This online exhibition looks at the shadow of Goya in the imaginary of a number of major African artists. Some of the works contain direct quotations. More often, however, they reveal similar responses to difficult histories and the search for humour and optimism in a context of anxiety and uncertainty.
