william kentridge

Kentridge (born Capetown, 1955) is best known for his prints, drawings, and hand-drawn animated films.  His works, like Goya’s, comment on injustice and violence in a poetic and often darkly humorous way. They reflect contemporary issues like the ecological degradation and exploitation of the mining industry, the controveries associated with the Truth and Reconciliation commission, and the HIV and AIDS epidemics. Coming from a background of acting, play-writing, directing and set designing, he often collaborates with other artists, puppeteers and craftspeople to create multi-media productions that include drawings and prints as key elements.
