Ronald Harrison ( 1940, Athlone – 2011, Cape Town) loved art as a child but was unable to develop his talent because of the lack of opportunities for non-white artists under apartheid. Angered by the violence and brutality of the apartheid government, Harrison decided to start using art as a political tool. When he finally revealed his Black Christ (1962) to his family, they were astounded, but also scared. It depicted African National Congress leader Chief Albert Luthuli as Christ crucified, flanked by two Roman centurions modelled after the then National Party prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd and justice minister John Vorster. His mother warned him that he is going to get into a lot of trouble. That turned out to be an understatement.
