michael armitage
Michael Armitage RA (born Nairobi, 1984) is a Kenyan/British painter who lives and works between London and Nairobi. Armitage paints in oil on Lubugo, a traditional bark cloth used by the Baganda people of Uganda. His paintings weave together his experiences in Kenya with current events in East Africa and references to European art history and mythology. In 2020, Armitage established the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute,a space where young Kenyan artists can learn and grow and Kenyan artists of earlier generations are recognized and celebrated.
