Johannes Phokela (born Soweto, 1966) is a painter and sculptor best known for his oil painting on canvas which combines subversive meditations on colonialism and its legacies with the imagery and highly skilled manner of Dutch and Flemish art of the 17th and 18th centuries. In a process he calls “destruction of iconic images,” he inserts red clown noses, images from popular culture, and objects such as AK-47 guns into famous historic works, often dividing the compositions into frames like comic strips.
